From Strict Import Regulations to Supply Shortages: Challenges in Surgical Instrument Manufacturing

June 11, 2025 – Pars Medal, a participant at the Iran Health Exhibition, manufactures a wide range of general and specialized surgical instruments as well as various types of anesthesia laryngoscopes. The company, based in Hall 41 of the Iran International Exhibition, has prioritized meeting domestic demand before considering export opportunities.

According to CEO Mehdi Parsafard, severe restrictions on importing raw materials have made it increasingly difficult to supply the country’s needs. One of the major challenges is securing the necessary foreign currency for imports, and the company has never benefited from the government’s preferential exchange rate.

Parsafard added that both a lack of adequate support for producers and persistent difficulties in importing essential raw materials have compounded the problem. Additionally, understaffing at the General Directorate of Medical Equipment has led to prolonged review processes, further slowing the supply chain.

He noted that the most commonly used surgical instruments in operating rooms number around 1,500, and these are crucial for a wide range of surgeries. The ongoing challenges in sourcing materials and regulatory bottlenecks continue to threaten the timely and sufficient supply of essential surgical tools in Iran.
