Biocompatible materials include bioactive\nand non-degradable types such as bioactive ceramics (e.g., bio-glass),\ncalcium-phosphate ceramics for tissue engineering, bioactive polymers, coated metals\nlike bioactive-coated metallic implants, as well as metals, polymers, and\nceramics such as hydroxyapatite.<\/p><p style=\"margin:0in;margin-bottom:.0001pt;text-align:justify\">Non-biocompatible or toxic materials\u2014often degradable\nand inactive\u2014include polymers like polylactic acid (PLA) and polyglycolic acid\n(PGA) used in sutures and drug delivery, composites, proteins such as collagen\nand gelatin for uterine repair and tissue engineering, ceramics like alumina\nand zirconia for artificial joints and teeth, and metals like pure titanium and\ncertain alloys with no biological response, as well as other polymers.<\/p><p style=\"margin:0in;margin-bottom:.0001pt;text-align:justify\">Highlighting the importance of ISO 10993, Dr. Borjian\nnoted that this standard is a key requirement for medical materials testing.\nAccording to ISO 10993, biocompatibility tests are categorized into three\ngroups: physical and chemical, in-vitro, and in-vivo.<\/p><p style=\"margin:0in;margin-bottom:.0001pt;text-align:justify\">Physical and chemical tests include assessments of\nstrength, stability, ethylene oxide residue, and substance release. In-vitro\ntests cover cytotoxicity, cell adhesion, blood compatibility, genetic toxicity,\nand endotoxin testing.
