June 11, 2025 \u2013 At the Iran Health\nExhibition 2025, the International Scientific and Technological Cooperation\nDevelopment Organization hosted the Connect Forum, focusing on expanding\ninternational scientific and technological collaboration. Dr. Amin Ardeshir\nDavani, CEO and founder of Navid Simorgh Technologists and holder of a PhD in\nBioinformatics from KU Leuven, Belgium, shared his journey from doctoral\nstudies abroad to building a pioneering genetics platform in Iran.<\/span><\/p>

Born in Shiraz in 1979, Davani\nrecounted his early years, high school at Sa\u2019adat School in Bushehr, initial\nwork in Iran\u2019s automotive industry, and his decision in 2009 to pursue advanced\nstudies in Belgium for its blend of academic prestige and applied research. His\nmaster\u2019s thesis\u2014focused on optimizing protein identification for pharmaceutical\napplications\u2014laid the groundwork for his doctoral research, despite initial\nsetbacks and the challenge of bridging academic research and industry needs.<\/span><\/p>

Davani emphasized that impactful innovation\nlies at the intersection of research and industry, noting that only a small\noverlap drives substantial change. He participated in multiple high-impact\nacademic projects and publications before deciding to pivot from research to\nthe genetics industry, motivated by a desire to serve Iran.<\/span><\/p>

Returning to Iran in 2017 with a young\nchild was a difficult decision, but Davani was determined to advance innovation\nat home. He likened Iran\u2019s innovation ecosystem to a complex subway system:\nwhile seemingly simpler than others, its true complexity lies in the interplay\nbetween its elements. He highlighted the unique challenges of Iran\u2019s startup\nenvironment, especially in genetics, but stressed the importance of continual\nprogress.<\/span><\/p>

Davani established Simorgh, initially\naiming to offer comprehensive genetic services. The company soon focused on\nrare diseases and, more recently, cancer, which remains a major health\nchallenge in Iran and globally. Starting with a three-person team, Simorgh has\ngrown to about 20 members, offering nearly complete genetic services despite\nongoing challenges.<\/span><\/p>

A major obstacle has been restricted\naccess to genetic sequencing equipment due to sanctions. However, the falling\ncost of sequencing and rising data volumes led Simorgh to develop a proprietary\nsoftware platform tailored to Iran\u2019s network infrastructure, ensuring secure\ndata transfer and accessibility for specialists.<\/span><\/p>

Davani credited his growing team and\nlocal networks for overcoming hurdles, securing knowledge-based company status,\nand achieving technology certification from the Health Technology Park.\nMembership in the Iranian Genetics Society, with support from leading\nscientists, was also pivotal.<\/span><\/p>

He acknowledged the complexities of\nIran\u2019s market\u2014from traditional structures to slow adoption of new economic\nmodels\u2014and the persistence of a \u201cshortcut mentality\u201d in academia and industry.\nDavani underlined the importance of maintaining quality and fair pricing, even\nas intermediaries sometimes disrupt healthy market dynamics.<\/span><\/p>
